the Tokkatsu (Holistic) Model

The Tokkatsu model of education stands for the Japanese version of holistic education. The Tokkatsu name originally came from the period, tokubetsu katsudo, in the Japanese curriculum, which utilizes noncognitve, nonsubject hours as a vital part of educating the whole child. Classroom discussion, cleaning, food education, student councils, club activities, etc. are brought into the curriculum, and integrated with cognitive, subject learning. Today, there are excellent Tokkatsu model-inspired practices in different cultures.  Educating students holistically, both cognitively and  noncognitively, is a 21st century goal.

The Lesson Study of Noncognitve learning: Linking Tokkatsu and Lesson Study

Lesson study is a model of collaborative learning of teachers, led by teachers. Since the 1990s, the lesson study model has been practiced in many countries. In the international sphere, however, lesson study has tended to rotate around subject, cognitive learning, especially math. With the growing recognition of the vital role of noncognitive learning for children, it is important to  strive to develop all aspects of the child holistically.  In order  to address student learning holistically, linking cognitve with noncognitve learning, recognizing hours outside of subjects as an important part of the student's socialization, and bringing noncognitive learning back into collaborative teacher learning, is part of our goal.
