The goals of the Global and Multicultural Society Research Institute are promoted through three units below, which are interrelated.
The Institute will promote research on culturally diversity in societies from an interdisciplinary viewpoint, and develop teaching materials which develop "global multicultural competence." Students are encouraged to think of issues such as global migration, refugees, North-South disparity, etc., as something which affect their own lives, and to link such issues with challenges in their own society. By "making cultural diversity visible" and "making diverse groups heard " in society, the Institute believes it is possible to change people's awareness and behavior.
The Tokkatsu Project
Since the mid-2000s, the Japanese educational model of holistic education (Tokkatsu Model) has started to be noticed internationally as a model for the holistic development of children and youth, which includes cognitive as well as noncognitive learning as part of the official curriculum. This unit researches and develops toolkits, videos, etc. of the model, and supports efforts in other societies to develop their own holistic educational models inspired by the Tokkatsu model. The unit further promotes mutual learning between countries in their pursuit of a better model of holistic education.
This unit puts together learning activities and teaching materials which will promote the goal of acquiring competence in global and multicultural issues. If there are events of interest for the non-Japanese speaking audience, such as publications of teaching material in elementary Japanese or other languages, the information will be shared on this homepage .
